What is a Pin Mill?

A pin mill is a high-speed impact grinding machine used for fine and medium grinding of soft to semi-hard materials into powder form. It is also known as a pin mill machine, disc mill, or universal mill.

The pin mill operates by using a series of steel pins arranged in concentric circles on two opposing discs one fixed and one rotating at high speed, or both rotating in opposite directions to grind material through high-speed impact between the pins and the feed material particles.

Pin mills are widely used across food, chemical, pharmaceutical, spice, mineral, and agrochemical industries because they offer a unique combination of high grinding efficiency, adjustable output fineness, simple mechanical design, easy cleaning, and low heat generation during grinding. Working Principle of a Pin Mill

The pin mill working principle is based on high-speed impact between the rotating pins and the feed material particles:

Step 1 Material Feeding :

The feed material is introduced into the center of the grinding disc through a central feed inlet located at the axis of the pin disc assembly. The material falls between the two opposing pin discs one fixed and one rotating at high pin mill RPM, or both rotating in opposite directions in the case of a counter rotating pin mill and begins its journey from the center to the periphery of the disc assembly.

Step 2 Impact Grinding :

As the rotating disc spins at high pin mill RPM typically 2,000 to 5,000 RPM depending on the material and required pin mill output size the pins on the rotating disc strike the feed material particles at very high velocity. The material is repeatedly impacted by successive rows of pins as it moves radially outward from the center feed point to the periphery of the disc, being progressively ground finer with each successive row of pin impacts encountered during its outward passage through the grinding zone.

Step 3 Size Reduction :

The high-frequency, high-velocity impacts between the pins and the material particles break them down through a combination of impact, shear, and attrition forces. The pin mill grinding action is particularly effective for brittle, fibrous, and heat-sensitive materials that require fine grinding without excessive heat generation, because the short, high-energy impact events generate minimal sustained heat compared to the continuous rubbing and friction of roller mills or the high-energy ball impacts of ball mills operating at similar throughput rates.

Step 4 Discharge and Classification :

The ground material is discharged from the periphery of the grinding disc assembly through a screen or directly into a collection hopper or cyclone separator. The pin mill output size is controlled primarily by the pin mill RPM, the pin disc configuration (number, diameter, and spacing of pin rows), and the screen aperture size if a screen is fitted. Fine adjustment of the output particle size distribution is achieved by varying the pin mill RPM using a variable speed drive.
